This interior design project was commissioned by a newlywed couple hoping to build their first shared home in the mountainous suburbs of Taipei. Inspired by postmodern interpretations of European neoclassicism, the space incorporates minimalist panel molding to create a sense of depth, form, and elegance. Arch-shaped structures—one of the most iconic features of traditional European architecture—are used at the entrance in a rectangular reinterpretation, softening harsh transitions and camouflaging structural irregularities such as beams and corners, while adding a refined and slightly exotic tone to the circulation space.
While the structure draws from European tradition, the furnishings and décor subtly evoke Japanese aesthetics, referencing the quiet sensitivity of mono no aware and the atmospheric depth of yūgen. This interplay of styles introduces a lyrical tension between order and impermanence, structure and time.
Color also plays a key role: a pale blue tone extends from the ceiling to the upper part of the walls, creating a tranquil and enveloping atmosphere. The deep brown wood flooring anchors the space, echoing the textures and patina of the vintage furniture and curated decorative objects. Together, these elements work in harmony to bring out a sense of temporal layering, allowing old objects to speak within a contemporary context. The result is a home that feels simultaneously intimate and composed—infused with quiet rhythm and unified tone.
